Wineries of the Bairrada region

The region is bounded to the north, south and east by low mountains and is washed by the salty waters of the ocean to the east, making Bairrada a valley that was a seabed in early historical periods. It is open to breezes from the Atlantic. Clay and sandy soils prevail here.

Nature generously gifted this fertile wine region. Rich velvety red wines, fragrant white wines and the highlight of this region are sparkling wines, produced in full compliance with classic French technology. The basis of grape crops here, as in most wine regions of Portugal, are autochthonous grape varieties. And you will be able to get an unforgettable experience by getting to know the new flavors of the well-known "champagne".

We will visit two wineries, where we will get to know all the intricacies of production. If desired, after visiting the wineries, we can go to the magical Buçaco Forest, in the center of which hides a romantic hotel, a palace of the royal family in the past.

The gastronomy of this region is especially worth noting. Thanks to the ocean, local restaurant´s menus are rich in fish and seafood. However, the most famous dish of Bairrada is the suckling pig roasted in the oven. Served with oranges, salad, boiled potatoes and brut sparkling wine. Who knows, maybe it will be the wine of one of the wineries that you will visit that day! For those who do not eat pork, the restaurant will offer another local dish "chanfana" - goat stewed in red wine.
