Tour to the Medieval Fair

Once a year, during the first week of August, the portal “opens” and we get the opportunity to visit a medieval fair where we can have fun, eat, drink and shop as the people of the Middle Ages did. I invite you to take a tour from Porto to the Medieval Fair!

Unlike some other Portuguese “medieval fairs”, products of the tourist industry, the fair in Santa Maria da Feira has every reason to be held in this town. After all, even the name of the town itself contains an indication of the fair, «feira». The historical reconstruction of the fair has been taking place since 1996 and it is the largest in Europe!

The organizers try to restore as much as possible the unique environment of the Middle Ages, for example, among the sweets you will not find cakes with chocolate, because it appeared in Europe only in the XVI century.

Every day during the fair week, there is a market in the streets, in the park area pig carcasses are roasted and simple dishes of that era are served. Drinking is mostly sangria laced with fresh apples, raspberries and blueberries.

The gem of each day is the spectacular night "battle".

There are a variety of attractions for children and adults, such as archery, horseback riding, pottery, and wooden sword fighting.

Every year the organizers choose a new theme for the whole fair, so attending the fair definitely becomes not only a fun experience, but also an interactive and fun introduction to the history of Portugal! It could be the reign of a single king or an event that influenced the course of Portuguese history.

In the evening, for an additional fee, you can watch a theatrical performance based on the theme of the Fair of that particular year.

To understand the historical context of the 2025 Fair, to taste the best appetizers and to see as many performances as possible in as little time as possible, you will need someone who has been to the Fair more than once and knows where to park the car, where the nearest ATM is, where the performances are...
